May 16-17, 2009! Celebrate. Remember. Fight Back! 2009 was an amazing event, full of fun, energy and lots of helpful people. The highlight was the Luminaria Ceremony on Saturday night. All in attendance walked the field with over 600 luminarias lining the track with the names of loved ones and personal messages of support. The cool night air was a welcome relief from the hot sun we had all day. That heat did not dampen the spirit of Relay! Thanks to Clark Magnet High School we were able to do most of the set up on Friday night. That really made a huge difference. We had the crew from Bonner's Party Rentals setting up tents and chairs, tables and pop-ups. We had over 12 teams set up most of their booths and the event logistics were all put in to place before one lap was every walked. Saturday started out at 6 a.m. with the teams coming back to the field to finish set up, staking the tents, decorating the booths and welcoming their team to the event. The opening ceremony was kicked off by our event Chairs, Chuck & Regan Boone. They congratulated everyone for their participation. Dallas Raines and Glendale City Council member Laura Friedman, both survivors, also spoke to the packed crowd to express their appreciation for all the efforts. A candle was lit to represent the fight against cancer and it burned all 24 hours. The survivors all came together at the front of the stage and they proceeded to walk the first lap with their caretakers. The survivors were also able to participate in a treasure hunt among all the teams on the field. Saturday was a celebration. The rest of the day was filled by live music from a multitude of great bands. David Schmidt was the master of ceremonies and the d.j. for the entire day. He did a great job of keeping the energy level up with fun games all day long. Over 28 items were being raffled off during the day for on-site fundraisers. You could also buy bake sale items, ice cream, popsicles, sprayers, glow sticks, sodas and other food items at various team booths. The food booth was highlighted by over 300 purple cupcakes cooked by a bunch of friends. The "Bead Lady", a.k.a. Mrs. Lund was busy all day long at the bead booth and literally thousands of laps were marked off one by one with beads. Lunch was provided by Montrose Travel and cooked up by the CV Rotary International. More food kept appearing all afternoon and Taco Deli, Der Weinerschnitzel, Burger King, etc. all chipped in with donated food for the hungry crowd. Dinner was provided by Gourmet A Go Go, the Maluccio Co. and New Moon Restaurant. Everyone ate well after a hard day's work. Saturday night is the time for the Luminaria Ceremony. All 28 raffle items were announced right before the ceremony started with lots of happy winners. The two big items were a 32 inch LCD HDTV and an 8gb iPod Nano. Once the raffle was done, it was time to remember. As the people continued to gather by the stage, 3 Clark Magnet students read a poem. That was followed by a surprise addition to the Foothills Relay For Life Volunteer Hall of Fame and then the planned induction of Laura Thornbury. A video was shown from Laura's Luminaria Ceremony speech in 2006 and her husband, Todd Thornbury, accepted the Star. Todd then lit the first candle from the candle that had been lit in the morning. As the candles were lit, one by one throughout the crowd, the bagpiper started playing the the entire group followed him around the field as the names of those remembered was read. It was a beautiful ceremony. More music, late night movies and more food followed the Luminaria Ceremony and as people started to get a bit of sleep in their tents, the track was still being circled by many, many walkers. All night long the walking continued for most teams. Greg Kilpatrick, Michael Duncan and Tyler Bradshaw all ran over 55 miles to beat a record set by one of the former members of the Kids Fighting Cancer team. Sunrise was greeted with the smell of fresh coffee and pancakes. As eyes opened and stomachs growled, the pancakes continued to hit the plates and magically disappear. The Fight Back ceremony began with some awards and announcements and then ended with the top 5 teams and individual fundraisers and then the grand total for the event, $100,779!!! That was the total raised by 29 teams as of Sunday morning, the final number should be even higher. A last group lap was led by Harrison Tate with the Fight Back flag. Tear down, pack up, clean up and goodbyes. 24 hours never went by so fast.
